Cords, pulleys and counterweights
Each sash hangs on two cords that run over pulleys in the frame to hidden counterweights. When a cord frays or snaps, or a weight comes loose, the balance is lost, and the window sticks, drops or won’t stay open.

Dust sheets laid throughout. Stop beads removed and paint scraped back so the sashes move freely.

Remove and inspect
Both sashes and the parting beads come out. Putty, joints, glass and timber are checked and repaired.

Four new cords
Fresh sash cords fitted on every window, so nothing is left to snap later.

Rebalanced
Weights checked and adjusted, with extra weight added where needed, for smooth one hand travel.

Reinstalled
Both sashes rehung, new parting beads fitted and the original stop beads refitted.

How much does sash cord replacement cost in Sydney?

Only one cord has snapped. Why replace all four?
The others are usually the same age and close behind. Fitting four new cords keeps the window balanced and saves a second callout.
My sash window is painted shut. Can it be saved?
Almost always. The paint is scraped back and the sashes freed carefully before new cords are fitted.
Can you repair broken pulleys or missing weights?
Yes. Seized pulleys are freed or replaced, and missing or mismatched weights are replaced so the sash balances properly.
How long do new sash cords last?
Quality cord, correctly fitted and balanced, lasts for many years. Matt checks the pulleys and weights at the same time so everything wears evenly.
Should I draught proof at the same time?
